Directions for the day: From Port Augusta drive south-east on the Stuart Highway for about 25km, then turn east onto highway B56 towards Wilmington. Brian Hehir says going through Horrocks Pass, just after we make the turn eastward, is hilly and probably 1st gear work. We are driving through the southern end of the Flinders Ranges here.
After Peterborough we head 14km east to the Barrier Highway, and then we are on the long stretch to Broken Hill. From here on out there are only very small settlements that we pass through.

Some history
Peterborough has a population of 1,800, and is an old railway town. It was settled in the 1870s to service the agricultural and pastoral industries. A favourite with railway buffs.

Broken Hill has a population of 20,000, and was established in the 1880s to service the miners who worked in the rich silver, lead and zinc mines of the Barrier Range. Note here that we are still on Central Standard Time (SA time), different from the rest of NSW. The historic streetscape of Broken Hill is classified by the National Trust.
